Kesopanan dan Kesusilaan
I came across this poem last year during the year 1 orientation week. The poem was printed on the programme book. I was so impressed with the verses and the wordings, and the meaning of its lines. And after a year, when I read it again, the feelings are still the same.

I copied the poem from here and not sure the exact source and who's the author. But one site mentioned that this poem is from Khazanah Adat Perpatih. The poem is about how one should behave, act or talk. Berbudi pekerti.

HIDUP SIFAT BERSIFAT

Hidup dalam pekerti
Mati dalam budi

Bila duduk, duduk bersifat
Bila tegak, tegak beradat

Bila bercakap, bercakap berkhasiat
Bila diam, diam makrifat

Kalau bercakap di bawah-bawah
Tapi tidak ke bawah sangat
Nanti mati dipihak gajah

Kalau duduk di tepi-tepi
Tapi jangan ke tepi sangat
Nanti tercampak ke pelimbahan

Kalau mandi di hilir-hilir
Tapi jangan ke hilir sangat
Nanti hanyut ditelah gelombang

Kalau makan berjimat-jimat
Tetapi jangan berjimat sangat
Nanti badan tinggal tulang

Kalau berlabuh pada yang tenang
Kalau berhenti pada yang teduh
Kalau bersandar pada yang kuat
Kalau bersila pada yang rata

Nice eh? Well, even though I have some queries on the words such as 'dipihak gajah' and 'ditelah gelombang', but the message is loud and clear. And if you share the same feelings as me, then I can be assured, there are still hope for this country/world.;)

Anyhow, besides describing the guide on how one should behave, the poem also stressed on moderation in everything that we do. Bersederhana dalam bab makan, bersederhana ketika bercakap... I guess it can also be extended to bersederhana dalam shopping, bersederhana dalam memuja seseorang (..oopps!) or bersederhana dalam berkempen..(double oopps!!)

I just hope that the 5th pillar of the country does not change from Kesopanan dan Kesusilaan to Kesopanan dan Kesusialan... (pardon my language). Peace!
The dark side of FB
Facebook, while it's good to keep you in touch with friends and family members, it also exposes you to some of its dark side.

Ever received a personal message like this?

Or a flattering one like this? A guy with sweet words like this. Who can resist huh? (Yeah...right...)

Or one with sweeter words like this one? Cair beb...(notttt!!)

Or one who is determined like this one? And you really think he is sincere and serious about falling in love with you. (Seriously???)

Thinking of replying their messages? Tettt.... wrong answer. Don't ever let yourself be fooled with these flattery messages from guys who look as decent as your next door neighbor. For all you know the profile pictures are just copy and paste from somewhere. You never know what devilish plans they have in mind if you respond to them. So do set boundaries to your FB. Even though there are many good sides of FB, beware of its dark side.

Sekian, pesanan khidmat masyarakat.:)

Peace be upon you
Last Sunday I managed to attend Dr Zakir Naik's talk at PWTC. Hemy registered for 4 person, myself, herself, Mas and a friend of Hemy's, Azrinie. Unfortunately, Mas could not join us so there was only the 3 of us.

Pic 'cilok'ed from Hemy's FB.

Dr Zakir Naik is an expert in comparative religions and has been giving talks around the world. He was in Malaysia for Malaysian tour. Before PWTC, he gave a talk in UiTM Shah Alam. Hemy and Mas went to that one. Since PWTC is nearer to my home, I decided not to miss this opportunity.

The topic of his talk was Islamic views on terrorism and jihad. Very interesting indeed. And his talk was open to the non-muslims as well. We arrived at PWTC after 6 pm and people were already arriving by the hundreds. I could not help admiring the jubahs the muslim women were wearing. Cantik-cantik...

The event started at about 8 pm. We managed to secure seats near the screen. Tak mendongak sangat, tak jauh sangat.

The crowd. Full house.

Tun Dr Mahathir was also present and gave the opening talk.

Then Dr Zakir gave his talk.

He spoke on how the words fundamentalist and jihad have been twisted to define Islamic extremist and holy war. He explained the true meaning of fundamentalist and jihad. Fundamentalist being a person who study/practice the fundamentals. Fundamentals can be anything be it fundamentals of the religion or even the fundamentals of science. As for me, I can be called a fundamentalist too kot? Fundamentalist of pharmacology :P

Jihad means to strive or to struggle. Jihad may change depends on situation. As a student, jihad to pass the exams. It may be jihad for the well being of own's family. And the most important and the most difficult jihad to do as an individual, jihad against nafs. Kena muhasabah diri ni...

He also spoke on the misconceptions of how non-believers think that Islam was spread by wars and coercion. He said no sword is held against people in any parts of the world, yet many has converted into Islam. He ended his talk by this quote: The non-believers are fearful of the weapons of Islam but in reality the bomb of peace has been dropped and spreading throughout the world. (lebih kurang la ayat dia mcm tu... can't remember word for word.) After all, Islam derived from Arabic word which means peace.

His talk was inspiring. And following his talk, there was a Q and A session. Priority was given to non-muslims. I was impressed by the way he answered the questions. He would quote the Quran, the Bible, Hindu scriptures complete with chapters and verses. Thus it was no wonder if people say the shahadah during this session.

The questions vary from who was actually the last prophet to reincarnation in Islam to what is love. The guy yang tanya pasal love tu memang kelakar.

This participant is not well-versed in English thus he has an interpreter to translate his question into English and the answers into Chinese.

One participant asked something about how the knowledge she got from the teachings of the church differ from what has been described by Dr Zakir. And to that, Dr Zakir stressed again and again, if you want to learn about Christians, read the Bible. Don't look upon the church. There are thousands of church in the world. Which church do you want to follow. Same as Islam, if you want to know more about Islam, read the Quran. Don't totally depend on the people.

I think that is a good point. Hmm... This is also true la kan: If you want to know more about a person, don't look at the car he/she is driving, sebab kereta tu beli secara hutang. Don't look at the handbag she is carrying, sebab handbag tu mungkin Petaling Street mari. Don't look at the jewelry she is wearing, sebab they may be fake. Instead look deeper into the heart. Peace.:)
Cabaran pascaRamadhan dan semasa Syawal
Ramadhan berlalu pergi.

Mudah-mudahan istiqamah, insyaAllah. Semoga Allah melipatgandakan ganjaran atas semua niat baik yang diusahakan.(Reminder to myself)

Syawal menjelma. Tahun ni beraya di Raub, Pahang dulu. Seperti biasa, bergambar itu mesti.

Posing tanpa anak-anak.

Posing dengan anak-anak.

Dah lebih seminggu bercuti, kena kerja la pulak kan. Gila penuh jadual kerja lepas raya ni.

28/8 - Mesyuarat bincang soalan
30/8 - Mesyuarat lembaga pemeriksa (pagi) /Mesyuarat Jawatankuasa Etika Penyelidikan (petang)
4/9 - Minggu Mesra Mahasiswa (pagi)/Mesyuarat lagi (ptg)
5/9 - Jamuan raya PPUKM
6/9 - Taklimat kem PPD clash dengan Postgraduate Day (mana satu nak pegi ni...?)
7/9 - Taklimat fasilitator PPD sem 3
10/9 - Mesyuarat lagi
11-14/9 - Kem PPD

Adoiii.......

Akhir kata, Salam Aidilfitri. Selamat menyempurnakan puasa 6. (again reminder to myself)
Tangan-tangankan anak
A couple of weeks ago, there was a meeting between the parents who have kids taking UPSR this year and the school's principal. And being one of the parents, off to the school we went on that Saturday.

The event started with a motivational talk by an ustaz who resides in Jerantut. It was a very interesting talk about parenting but unfortunately I can't remember his name. Nor can I remember the consultation company that he's attached to. This memory failure is so frustratingat wits' end. But I still remember the gist of his talk and would like to share it here.

'Sayangkan anak, tangan-tangankan'. We often heard this phrase. And usually we refered 'tangan-tangankan' as memukul in the name of educating the kids. The speaker gave different perspectives to that phrase:

1. Tangan-tangankan as in parents using the hands to work and cari rezeki halal in order to provide shelter, food, clothes for the kids.

2. Tangan-tangankan as in parents using the hands to guide the kids and facilitate them to the right path.

3. Tangan-tangankan as in parents using the hands to lift up the kids when they fall or when faced with failures or obstacles in life.

4. Tangan-tangankan as in parents using the hands to spank the kids when necessary. However, this must be done appropriately and has its limits.

5. Tangan-tangankan as in parents put their hands together and du'a; pray to Allah that the kids will grow to be a good muslim/muslimah.

So, next time you consider this phrase during your parenthood, remember its many facets big grin.

Hmm... can't help myself, but that is only half the phrase, the other half goes like this: Sayangkan bini, tinggalkan-tinggalkan. Considering from different perspectives, tinggal-tinggalkan does not always mean leave the wife behind while the husband goes to work but can also imply: tinggal-tinggalkan duit sekepuk dua, or kereta 2, 3 bijik or emas berlian sepeti dua... Ok, kidding... winking

Anyhow, in living our live, we have an individual with exemplary behavior and character that we can follow i.e. none other than our prophet Muhammad. Mudah-mudahan.

Wishing all readers salam Maulidur Rasul happy.
In Giving, We Receive
Every year, for the past few years, my hubby and a few of his colleagues (mostly Citibankers), organized a fund collection for an orphanage. The choice of orphanage varies from year to year. The fund collected is usually used to buy necessities for the kids in the orphanage. This year, it was Rumah Silaturrahim Nurul Qana'ah, Greenwood, Gombak.  In conjunction with the 'Back to school' theme, quite a handsome sum of money was collected and the money was efficiently managed to buy school uniforms, shoes, socks and stationery. In addition, the kids were treated to lunch at Sekinchan Ikan Bakar, Sri Gombak. And still got extra money which was also donated to the orphanage. Well, what do you expect from bankers eh? Money management is their forte big grin.

Below is the full story of the activity plus pictures. Credit to husband's colleague, Faizal,  for this special bulletin. Actually, this piece is good enough to be included in Kosmo winking.

You don't have to be in any NGOs or societies to perform an act of kindness such as this. It is just a question of whether you want to or not. May this effort continues in years to come. And may more people lend their hands in any way they can. Because it is in giving, we receive big hug. InsyaAllah.
Boomerangs of Life
Have you ever encountered this scenario?

At a traffic light, my car was several cars away from the junction. When the light turned green, the line seemed to move very slow. Looks like a driver was not aware of the change of light. As a results, the light changed to red and I was still stuck at the junction. Muttering to myself, 'Tidur ke?? Or busy texting? FBing maybe? ..sheesh... bebel...bebel...bebel...' angry It was quite a long wait. So, what the heck, I glanced at my phone and check for FB notifications. Well, it turned out, I did more than a glance. When I looked up, the light had turned green again and I saw a big gap between my car and the car in front. Yikes!! surprise Looking guiltily at the car behind via the rear-view mirror, I pushed my foot hard on the accelerator. The car behind must be muttering the same obscenities to me. Mujur the driver did not honk. Maybe he/she was doing the same thing as me? winking

What about this scenario?

At a toll plaza. I have a Touch and Go card but no Smart Tag. So, I chose the lane that had the shortest queue. And I was ready with my TnG card. But the driver in front was taking his/her own sweet time and of course that invited more mutterings, more membebel and more expletives from me. Well, mild expletives je...big grin Finally the car in front decided it was time to move on and I impatiently took my place at the TnG sensor. The card was already in my hand and I was ready to put out my hand and touch the card to the sensor. The next thing I knew was, my hand banged onto the closed window of my car. Dang!! d'ohRasa nak hantuk kepala je kat tingkap tu dek kerana kebodohan dan kesombongan diri sendiri. I was too busy condemning the driver in front that I forgot to wind down my own window. Ambik kau!!

Or maybe you have faced this kind of scenario before:

At a toll plaza again. Now I own the Smart Tag. At that particular toll plaza, there are two lanes for Smart Tag users. And I tried to choose the lane that will be the fastest. And guess what? I chose wrong again. at wits' endTwo cars in front, a car stalled. Maybe the Smart Tag device was out of battery, maybe the TnG card was not topped up, or maybe the driver just realized that he/she did not own a Smart Tag nor TnG winking. Well, those differential diagnoses were running through my head, along with some more muterings, more condemning and more mild expletives.  The driver finally solved whatever problem he/she was having. I sighed, and eager to continue my way when to my exasperation, the 'bertuah' Smart Tag sensor could not detect my Smart Tag device and the message that appeared on the screen was 'TIADA KAD'. Cheh!! angry

Pic from here.

Moral of the story: Don't say bad things about people, don't treat people bad shame on you. Coz those words, those nasty acts are just like boomerangs. They would come back and most likely hit you. You just never know when. Kadang-kadang immediately after.
Kalau Ada Sapu Tak Ada Minta
My father was a Custom officer and has retired more than 20 years ago. He held a quite high post then. But he worked his way up there from the bottom.  And I know he was proud of his work. His first pay when he first joined the government was about RM98. But that was light years ago and that amount of money is considered big at that time. Imagine having that kind of pay now. Isyh... tak terimagine.winking

A picture of my father taken 2 years back.

Anyhow, over the years of hard work, my father develops osteoarthritis in both of his knees and goes for regular check-up in the orthopaedic clinic. Recently, in one of his appointments, he must have mentioned to the attending doctor of his previous job. The doctor jokingly told him the current meaning of Kastam.

K - Kalau
A - Ada
S - Sapu
T - Tak
A - Ada
M - Minta

My father was amused with the joke. Hmm... thinking Joke ke? It's reality smack on the face actually.

My father said, 'Kalau dulu tak ada semua tu'.

Another elderly patient who was also in the same treatment room said to my father: 'Sebab tu you tak kaya-kaya. Tak apa.. patut syukur'.

True... kalau kaya, duit haram pun tak guna jugak...happy
