The day I got mugged
You read it in the papers. You watched it on the news. You saw people posting about it on FB. You tweeted or retweeted about it. And you think that it will never happen to you. Well, it did. It happened to me.

31st May 2013. It was already past 9 pm when I decided to go to Giant Batu Caves for an urgent shopping, alone. I put on a pair of jeans, wore a jacket over my t-shirt and cover my hair with a tudung and drove to Giant. The place is less than 5 minutes by car.

I finished my shopping in less than an hour. I remembered glancing at the time when I was about to leave Giant. It was 10.04 pm and my thought was, alamak.. Maharaja Lawak dah start... So, I hurried to my car which was parked quite a distance away from the entrance. Then it happened.

I was opening the car's door when I saw two males on a motorbike approaching. I was surprised at first seeing them, which then turned into terror when I glimpsed something shiny, which looked like a knife in the hand of one of them. That guy got off the motorbike and came after me. I tried to run but he grabbed my tudung from the back. And I screamed my lungs out, 'Tolong!! Tolong!!" I was holding my purse and my handphone in my left hand. I also held two shopping bags in the same hand. The guy grabbed the plastic bags and tried to snatch it away from my hand. I resisted and hold on while screaming 'Tolong!! Tolong!! Ya Allah!'. I heard the guy said, Lepas kak, lepas... So, I let go. I let go of the two plastic bags. But still holding on to my purse and my handphone. The guy ran to the motorbike and then I supposed he suddenly realized that he only got the plastic bags but not my purse. So, he turned back and started to come after me again. By now, I should have run away la kan. But don't know why. Terror-stricken? Adrenaline? I just stood there, looking at the guy and screamed continuously, Tolong!! Tolong!! Heroic or foolish ntah. But the guy changed his mind and throw the plastic bags on the ground and got on the motorbike and they sped off.

Then I saw people coming towards me asking me what happened. I told them about the 2 guys, that I was not hurt and that they got away with nothing. I was shaken but I was not crying. Just shaken. I did not stay or considering of lodging a report to whoever in-charge there. I just wanted to get the hell out of there. So, I picked up my shopping bags and drove home. Only when I saw my husband and told him what happened, did I burst into tears.

I kept reliving the scary moments over and over again in my mind. And playing the what ifs game in my mind. What if the guy used the knife on me? What if I got stabbed? What if he stick the knife on my hand? Etc etc... I also wondered, was it really knife that I saw? I have no idea because it happened too fast and I was too busy screaming and holding on to my things to get a closer look.

By Allah's mercy, I escaped unhurt and I still got my valuable with me. Except for a pain in my left little finger which developed swelling the following day. Must be due to the tug-of-war between me and the perpetrator. Otherwise, I am fine physically. Alhamdulillah, sangat-sangat bersyukur. But mentally... Was I shaken? Yes. Was I traumatized? Yes, to some extent. Phobia? Hmm.... maybe. But life goes on. I still have to leave the house alone for work and other errands. But I think I will stay away from Giant for a while and leave all the matters related to Giant to hubby.

Lesson learnt. I  have to be wary of people and the surroundings. Of course, we try to bersangka baik dengan orang but we cannot deny the fact that there are lots of sick, crazy and desperate people out there. I pray for my safety and the safety of my family and friends from these crazy people. And for the two guys who had the bad intention on me the other night, may Allah has mercy on them too and gave them hidayah to change for the good. Amiinnn...
Men from Mars, women from Venus?
It is a known fact that men can't seem to understand women. Women love to communicate via hints while men tend to be straightforward. When women said they are fine, they may not be fine after all. When women said they are not that hungry, just take them to a restaurant. Bila kata tak kisah, sebenarnya kisah.

I read something about this in Facebook the other day. And I found the same article here. An excerpt of the article:

Begin copy -

Not sure who's the original writer. But yes, I guess there are some truth in it. Maybe I'm guilty of it some times and was not even aware of it.

Recently, I made a statement to my husband how my S3 battery drains out very fast. And I blamed it on excessive whatsapping with my girlfriends. Well, maybe due to heavy facebooking as well...:)

Then after a few days he bought me this:

Powerbank! Cool... Now I don't have to worry about the phone dying out on me or having the hassle of bringing the charger along or to find for electric point to stick it in.

And then, on another day, I made a remark that my few-years-old Panasonic Lumix camera mcm dah tak sharp je bila ambik gambar. Alasan la kan... tak pandai ambik gambar salahkan camera. Ha ha...

Few days after that, he bought me a new camera. Double cool...

Well, in the first place, tak mintak pun beli powerbank or camera baru. Honestly those statements were made without any intention. Biasa la kot, org pompuan, semua benda nak grumble or nak whine. Sometimes words of sympathy pun dah cukup. Bukan mintak beli baru pun.

But reading the article about how women say things that they don't mean, well... maybe I sent the wrong signal unconsciously. And somehow my husband expertly read those unspoken signals. So, are men really from Mars? Yeah, maybe. But some men may have ventured to Venus and learn something about women.

Hmm.... lepas ni nak send signals pasal apa pulak eh...? Handbag? Kereta? ;D
Que sera sera
1979-1984
Standard 1 until 6. Every year, we were asked, what we want to be when we grow up. The most popular ambitions were doctor, engineer, teacher. I remembered, my top 3 were doctor, teacher and some times police and at other times lecturer. But the occupation which appeared the most in my personal file was to become a doctor. Things look good when I managed to score 5As in Peperiksaan Penilaian Darjah 5.

1985-1987
I was lucky to enrolled in one of the best boarding schools in Malaysia. I still dreamed of becoming a doctor. I sat for my SRP then and scored okay la... Not that excellent though. Not straight As.

1988-1989
Based on the SRP's results, I continued to chase my dream and was put in one of the Science stream classes. I worked hard for the SPM, well, at least I think I did. Results: ok la, not bad, not excellent either.

1990-1992
The dream of becoming a doctor began to realize when I was accepted to join the UKM's matriculation programme. Gedebak gedebuk, after 2 years and after the final exam, it turned out that my results were not good enough to enter the medical programme. Was I frustrated? Was I disappointed? Was I down? Of course. Especially when most of my best friends from the matriculation sailed through and get a place in the medical faculty.

1992-1993
Life goes on. I was placed in Life Sciences Faculty (Fakulti Sains Hayat) in Bangi. The disappointment and the feeling that I was a failure haunted me. It did affect my studies then. I lost interest in most of the courses taught. Just imagine having to learn about botany, zoology, organic chemistry etc etc etc. I am not looking down on those topics, it just that I had no passion for those topics. But Allah Maha Adil dan Maha Bijaksana. When He closes one door, He actually opens another. A group of lecturers were setting up a new faculty with new programmes such as Biomedical Sciences and Optometry. They were enrolling new students and invited applications from interested and eligible students of Life Sciences. Well, cutting the long story short, I applied. And I got a place. Tak dapat medic, dapat biomedic pun was good enough at that time. At least, some of the frustrations were washed away.

1993-1996
Being the first batch of students in the new programme, we enjoyed it very much. There were very few of us. We were very close, like brothers and sisters. We know our lecturers quite well. And we had quality teaching-learning session. However, as I approached the final year (Year 4), the worry about the future began to fill up the mind. Nak kerja apa nanti? To become scientist? To become science officer? Or to become sales executive of laboratory supplies company? Those were amongst the prospect then. I remembered on my graduation day, the person who presented me the scroll, asked me nanti nak jadi apa. My impromptu answer was, nak jadi saintis. Ha ha... No more to become a doctor. That dream shattered in 1992.:)

1996-1997
I tried to look for a job. Every day, tengok iklan dalam surat khabar. Once, I even went to the extent of trying to attend a walk-in interview kat kilang apa ntah and kat mana ntah. Only to find out, there was no walk-in interview on that day. Maybe they have filled up the post or whatever. Penat je pergi. I even applied to become a temporary teacher. Because I have seen my older sister became one when she finished her studies. And nampak mcm best je, tanda2 buku kerja and kertas exam anak2 murid. Well, I was then offered the job but I did not report for duty. Because at that time, I heard from a friend of mine that there's a lecturer who required a research assistant and I thought that will be a better option. So I became a research assistant to Prof Ima, in the Dept of Pharmacology, Medical Faculty, UKM.

1997-2001
Alang-alang dah jadi research assistant and buat research, Prof Ima offered me doing Masters under her supervision. Well, since I have nothing else to do, why not. So I became a student again. And lucky for me, after 1 year plus of doing Masters,  Prof Ima recommended me to upgrade to PhD. So, I converted from a masters candidate to PhD candidate. I got married during this period. I got pregnant with my first child while I was doing my final laboratory analysis. In fact, I was pregnant with my second child when I received the PhD scroll in 2001.  Alhamdulillah, rezeki Allah beri. Looks like I had a smooth ride eh? Not really. I had my ups and downs during these years. Frustrations with the PhD work, financial problem and the stress of being a mother. But those hardships made me stronger. Alhamdulillah.

2000-2001
While I was doing my PhD, the department had a vacancy and I applied for the tutor job. It was a golden opportunity and I would be crazy to let it go. Thus, began my career at the Department of Pharmacology.

2001-present
After I have graduated for my PhD, I became a lecturer and slowly trudging along my career pathway. I have finally fulfill my dream of becoming a doctor, but a different kind of doctor. I am also a scientist and involved in numerous research work. I love my job and I think the failure to get into the medical school was the best thing that could have ever happened to me.

I was reminded of this song when I wrote this entry:
'Que sera sera,
Whatever will be, will be,
The future's not ours to see,
Que sera sera'

Yes, whatever will be, will be. Kun faya kun... Allah is indeed Maha Bijaksana. He knows best.
My SDII story
One of the good (or bad) things when you are in the FB network, you may got tagged or you may see people who were tagged in numerous advertisements and online business and whatnots. One of them is this protein drink SDII. Looking at the marvelous testimonials plus the convincing before and after pictures made me wonder, does this product really works?

Eventually, to cut the story short, I bought 1 tin. Friends asked me, kau nak slim apa lagi, kan dah slim... Erkks... slim ke?? Well, I still have hidden (not so hidden) fat (yang tegar) that I need to shed. So my journey with SDII begins. RM150 terbang.

First dose of SDII: Two scoops plus 250ml of plain water. Shake...minum sikit... yuckks.... Rasa mcm nak termuntah. I was reminded of the glucose drink when I had to do the glucose tolerance test during my previous pregnancy. But I managed to finished the drink and retain it in the stomach. And subsequent drinks, I thought it would be easier but no... I still cringe and made faces every time I chugged the drink down my throat. Well, holding your breath while drinking helps a little.

After 1 tin, what's the results? Ha ha... Macam tak de perubahan pun. I lost more weight when I did my puasa 6 marathon during Syawal recently. Well, maybe for some people it works but if you are like me, better forget it. Because:

1. I was supposed to drink 3-4 times a day. But I have a very bad compliance issues. Sometimes I only drank once, often only twice a day, rarely 3 times, never 4 times. One tin was supposed to lasts for only 1 week. It took me longer than that.
2. I was supposed to restrict to protein diet and stay away from carbohydrates and sugared drinks. There was many a time I broke this rule. Especially at home. Siapa yang nak abiskan nasi or lauk pauk anak bila anak tak abis makan? Plus I often had lunch/tea/ice-cream with friends. Takkan nak tengok je kawan-kawan tu makan. Harus kena temankan.
3. Finally, of course la, exercise very the malas.

So, conclusion (for me, not for anyone else), cukup la 1 tin. Better do it naturally. But first, lunch date with the Kiahs (Hemy and Mas) in approximately 1 hr time.:P

The anniversary surprise
Hubby and I celebrated our 14th year of marriage today. We rarely exchange gifts during anniversaries. Partly maybe because we just celebrated our birthdays, his in August and mine in September. But we still remember the date and wish each other.

So this year, I did not plan or buy anything for him. But I was surprised with a very nice practical gift the night before. A blue Samsung.

Well, not actually a surprise because I have been talking about getting a new phone before that. UKM has this mobile phone policy which enables its staff to buy a new phone every 2 years and it will be such a waste if I don't use it. I was discussing with hubby on the options of smartphones available yesterday and Samsung has a very nice range of smartphones. And I said, we should go to the shop together and to decide later whether I should buy it or not. But I did not expect him to buy the phone there and then. So it was a very nice surprise.

In return, I thought of doing something nice for him. Something to surprise him. So, in the very narrow time frame, I managed to surf the web for online gift delivery service. And I came upon this website. Ordering and delivering is as easy as a click of the mouse.:)

I went out for lunch with hubby and had the data from my Blackberry transferred to the Samsung. While we were waiting for the transfer process, hubby received a call from an unrecognized number. He did not answer. Alasan, nombor tak kenal, malas nak layan. I half-guessed that the call must be from the delivery people. So when the call came again, I answered. It was the delivery guy. So I forced my hubby to speak to the guy. My hubby membebel, 'ntah ada parcel apa ntah. Tinggal je la kat receptionist tu...'  And all those while, I acted like I don't have a clue what it is all about. He he...

So surprise menjadi... This was the gift basket.

It came with a nice anniversary card.

At the end of the day, I got a new toy, hubby got his surprise, the kids dapat banyak coklat. Siapa yang lebih untung ni??? :-D

At the moment, I'm still occupied with my surprise gift. Still getting used to the functions and swiping and whatnots of the phone. I do miss some features from the BB though. But to be technologically advance, kena la jugak move on. Ha ha... A friend asked yesterday, pakai phone apa pulak sekarang? I said, tukar yang samseng sikit. He he... samseng la sangat... Daripada bebiri ke samseng...:P

Hmm.... maybe I'll write something about BB vs Samsung. Tengok la, if sempat and rajin.
Selamat Hari Guru
Favret betul time tu.

Masa tu, pergi sekolah, tak payah pakai uniform. So boleh melaram pakai baju biasa je. Satu hari tu, aku pakai skirt yang agak lawa la jugak.:P Masa nak balik macam biasa tunggu van arwah Pak Ngah kat kantin sekolah.
Selamat Hari Guru.

Masa sekolah rendah, sekolah yang sama jugak, Methodist Girls School, Raub. Tak ingat darjah berapa tapi fobia betul dengan subjek Inggeris. Sebab setiap minggu cikgu akan tanya what did you do last week. Public speaking memang suatu benda yang menakutkan masa tu, lagi pulak in English. So tiap-tiap minggu, stress pikir apa benda nak cerita and nak arrange ayat untuk cerita. Satu minggu tu, kebetulan aku memang ada benda nak cerita sebab minggu sebelum tu aku pergi rumah kawan aku (dia duduk sebelah aku masa kat kelas). So, bila sampai turn aku, aku pun cerita la. Bila cikgu tau aku pegi rumah kawan aku tu, dia terus tanya kawan aku tu rumah dia kat mana etc etc etc.

Mintak maaf cikgu kerana menyelongkar locker cikgu. Selamat Hari Guru.

Sebelum masuk matrikulasi, sempat Tingkatan Enam sekejap. Sekolah Menengah Mahmud Raub.
Selamat Hari Guru.

Masuk matrikulasi, tahun pertama kat Sekolah Muzaffar Syah Melaka. 'Azlina!! Tidur??!!' Adoiihh... terkejut + malu + terus segar tak berani nak tidur dah.
Terima kasih cikgu di atas segala tunjuk ajar. Selamat Hari Guru.

Matrikulasi tahun kedua kat Pusat Matrikulasi Kuala Pilah. Subjek yang paling disukai English & Fizik, English sebab senang nak score, Fizik sebab cikgu dia kelakar yang amat. Ada satu hari tu cikgu Fizik tu tengah mengajar. Alih-alih dengar lori sampah lalu kat tepi kelas. Laa... dia kata, lori sampah... tapi betul la, bau macam roti canai. Gelak besor kitorang satu kelas.
Terima kasih cikgu sebab menceriakan kelas Fizik walaupun Fizik susah yang amat nak score. Selamat Hari Guru.

Masuk universiti, masa tahun pertama kat Bangi. Selain daripada kursus-kursus wajib, kena ambik jugak kursus-kursus elektif. Salah satu kursus elektif yang aku ambik, Asas Pengurusan Perniagaan. Tapi sekarang, satu hapah apa pun aku tak ingat apa benda yang aku belajar dulu.
Terima kasih kepada pensyarah yang mengajar. Selamat Hari Guru.

Then tahun kedua sampai tahun keempat, pindah ke UKM kampus KL. Masa tahun 3, boleh pulak kena chicken pox. Kena pulak minggu depannya exam. Terpaksa la ambik MC and tak dapat hadir exam. Sure tension jugak lecturer masa tu sebab nak kena prepare set soalan yang lain and nak cari masa buat exam untuk aku sorang. Dah jadi lecturer macam sekarang, baru tau macam mana susahnya nak prepare soalan exam. Tu la... masa kecik-kecik tak nak kena chicken pox. Dah besar menyusahkan orang.
Terima kasih kepada semua pensyarah. Selamat Hari Guru.

Dah abis degree, disebabkan kerja pun susah nak dapat, sambungla buat Masters then PhD. Masa tu jugak la nak kawin, mengandung bagai.
Selamat Hari Guru.

Selamat Hari Guru.
The best planner
I would be lying if I say I don't wish for a son. I remembered years ago. If my memory is still good, I think I have delivered 3 daughters then. My eldest daughter said something like this, 'Along doa dapat adik lelaki'.

I said my little prayer as well. I prayed to Allah that if a son is what is best for us, please grant us a son.  I have also put in extra effort as well like Chinese calendar la, ovulation time la and macam-macam lagi. Two daughters later, I'm sure, this must be the best for us. Well, I have to admit that I may have felt a little bit of disappointment when I found out that I'm going to have another girl.

And once, I came upon this FB status on a friend's wall who shared it from a mufti, which I couldn't agree more:

Mufti Ismail Menk
When things do not go exactly the way we wanted, when we do not achieve what we have tried so hard to or when we feel so let down by others then always know that for as long as we have faith and trust in the Almighty, He definitely has something better in store for us, has saved us from a calamity or disaster that would have been in our path or has elevated our status through surrendering to His Decree. We are not considered believers until we are pleased with the Decisions of the Almighty. This will save us from much anxiety and depression. Try your best and leave the rest to Him.

Alhamdulillah, I'm more at peace now and proud to say I have 5 daughters.

Cuma orang lain je yang tanya, tak nak try lagi for a boy? Naahh... my family is complete as it is. I feel so blessed to have these daughters. Alhamdulillah for this tremendous rahmat.

Now, tunggu menantu je la. Dapat ala-ala Seth Tan pun jadik la...:P
Ups and Downs of a Breastfeeding Mother
I have 5 kids and I breastfed all of them. At least for a year. In fact I'm still breastfeeding my youngest child who is now 8 months old. Breastfeeding is supposed to be an enjoyable experience for the mother and I'm enjoying it. However, I have my share of frustrations and despair.

1. The first few weeks are the toughest. Milk flow is still insufficient. The baby seems not getting enough. And you tempted to turn to formula milk. But the key is, you just have to continue feeding the baby. Until your body recognize the demand induced by the baby sucking and more milk is produced.

2. During the first few weeks too, it was vey painful to feed the baby. And sometimes I dread breastfeeding time. In addition, the nipples could bleed. And it freaked me out when I saw blood smeared on the baby's lips. They said you have to feed the baby in the correct position to avoid this painful and bloody experience. Ntah la, dah anak 5, and dah try adjusting the position, still sakit jugak. The key is, let the bleeding and throbbing nipple heal. It heals quite fast. In the meantime, can express the breast milk and give it to the baby via feeding bottles. With time, the pain will cease and bleeding no more. But frankly, the thoughts of giving up occured numerous times in my mind.

3. When my maternity leave was about to end, I started to stock up on the EBM. But when the baby refused to drink from bottles, susah hati woo...

4. On working days, I have to find time to express the milk, at least twice. For convenience, I have a mini bar fridge in my office room. But sometimes, I have to travel to HUKM and some other places for meetings and teaching commitments. I have to standby ice and usung Coleman ke hulu ke hilir.

5. Sometimes, working commitments delayed milk expression. And left wet spots on my clothes you know where.

6. Sometimes the delay in milk expression will cause engorgement. Boleh demam dibuatnya. And I have to swallow Panadol to relieve the feverish state.

However, there are a lot of benefits. Such as:
1. It's money saving, no need to buy formula milk.
2. No need to wake up at night to prepare milk.
3. Maintain body weight. Ye ke? I still have to work on my abs... Lemak degil tahap maksimum.

There are other benefits but the best is the bonding between mother-child. The way the child holds on to your fingers or your hair or your clothes during feeding and the way the child looks at you with doting eyes and the lalok expression the child has on his/her face as he/she breastfeed. Priceless...

For those who are breastfeeding and plan to breastfeed your child, remember the up and down of breastfeeding: when you're feeling up, milk letdown would be easier, InsyaAllah. :)

UPSR butterflies in the stomach
Wow!! It has been over 2 months since I last updated this page. Teruk betul... If ever this blog applies KPI (key performance index) score, I'll surely fail. Silap-silap yearly assessment less than 85% thus no annual increment. Nak naik pangkat pun susah. If la kan...:P

Lots of things to write, lots of things to tell but so limited time, or rather malas and tak kuasa sebenarnya. Now, since I have a few minutes to spare, I'd better write a few lines.

Tomorrow, the UPSR results will be announced and my eldest is one of the candidates who is waiting anxiously for the results. And of course, I'm one of the mothers yang tak senang duduk jugak.

This situation reminds me of the time when I was waiting for my SRP and SPM results years ago. I remembered how determined I was to be the first person in the family to know my results. Sendiri punya results kan, so I'm entitled to know first. And I remembered how pissed I was when I found out that either my father or my sister called the school to find out about my results BEFORE ME. Gila bengang masa tu. Siap merajuk-rajuk, berkurung dalam bilik. Serious, ntah hape-hape. Buruk perangai betul.

And now, having my own kid, I think I finally understand my father's action. The anxiety for your own child, the worry over your own child, the fierce feeling trying to protect your own child from bad news and the eagerness to share the good news with your own child... all mixed into one. Those are the butterflies that I have in my stomach right now.

Mudah-mudahan it's good news tomorrow. Even if it's not, I'm still proud to have a daughter like my Syakila Nor Alia... (tiba-tiba rasa nak nangis...isk..isk...isk...)
The maths of maternity leave
One of the perks as a government servant, is the fully-paid maternity leave. However, there's a catch. (There's always a catch, huh?) One can only take maximum 300 days of maternity leave throughout service. So, considering 2 months of maternity leave, the maximum no of kids you can have to be able to get full pay during your maternity leave is 5. Ok la kan... 5 considered big family dah tu.

I had my first kid in 1999. I was a student. So, basically, no maternity leave at all. In fact, as a postgraduate student, I was allocated only 2 weeks of leave every semester. However, with kind consideration from my supervisor at that time, dapat jugak la cuti.

Then I started working and had my second child. 60 days of maternity leave and I still have 240 days remaining.

3rd child - 60 days of leave again - 180 days remaining.

4th child - another 60 days taken from the bank - 120 days remaining.

Recently, the government decided to allow its servants to take maternity leave up to 90 days. But the catch is, the maximum total days remained 300. So, maximum no of kids reduced from 5 to 3 if someone fully use the 90 days allocation. Well, of course you can still opt for 60 days maternity leave. Pilih la, nak anak banyak ke nak cuti lama...:)

My timing was just perfect because I had my 5th kid soon after the government made the decision. Since I still have enough maternity leave remaining, dengan sukacitanya I took 90 days. Well, as of now, 1 month already gone. Time sure flies.

Doing simple maths, I still have 30 days remaining. Maybe just enough for another kid. Not!! :)
A tale from the labour room
Today is supposed to be my expected delivery date. Well, it is just an estimate and you never know when the baby decides to say hello to the world. In my case, it was decided for the baby, 2 weeks ago. I was 38 weeks into my pregnancy and my obstetrician advised me to came in and go for labour induction. The main reason is that I had placenta abruptio in my previous pregnancy and since the recurrent rate is high so it is best for me to deliver earlier.

The best thing of having a pre-determined delivery date is that I can be prepared and not having to go through the panic of rushing to the hospital and had my water broke in the car (that's what happened in my 3rd pregnancy).

Anyhow, I was admitted to UKM specialist center on the 2nd of June, 12 days earlier than the expected date.

One of the first things that I did when I was admitted: selecting the menu.

One tablet of Prostin was administered intravaginally at 10 am and uterine contractions followed soon after that. I started to have quite strong contractions at noon. From 5-7 minutes apart, they came faster until I barely had a rest in between. The pain jangan cakap la. Almost unbearable (but still managed some FB activities during that time...:P).

The cardiotocograph (CTG) reading during contraction-free period.

During one of the contractions. See the difference?

Being the 5th pregnancy with 3 normal deliveries, I should have been tolerant to the pain, shouldn't I? But this time the pain was phenomenal. People did say that the pain due to induction is greater. And I was lucky to be the living proof of that.

I was in and out of pain throughout the whole afternoon. I finally asked for analgesic and they gave me a pethidine jab which did not help at all. The pain was still there, worse if not the same. The jab only made me sleepy, and on top of that it left a nasty bruise on my right arm. Why not epidural eh? Well, I'm not the expert here but I supposed the risk of uterine rupture during induction, esp with previous Ceasar scar may have something to do with it. Having epidural may mask any pain along the scar that can be one of the signs of uterine rupture. Again, I'm no expert.

Earlier my obstetrician informed me that if the induction failed to soften and dilate my cervix, she would call it a day and insert another Prostin tablet the next day. She won't take any risk and continue for fear of uterine rupture due to my previous Ceasar scar. Oh no!! The thought of going through another agonizing day was too much for me to handle.

My water finally broke at 7 pm. I was 6 cm dilated then. Dari pukul 12, baru 6 cm. Biar betul... I was wheeled to the labour room at 8 pm. Sempat jugak la abis tengok cerita Nora Elena kat TV :D.

Almost another hour of agony in the labour room (and I'm greatly thankful for Mr Hubby's presence throughout the whole thing), I finally delivered a perfect baby girl at 8.56 pm. Her angelic face is definitely worth the pain. Alhamdulillah. Welcome to the world Syamila Nor Akma. *kiss*kiss*

Dengue during pregnancy
At 36 weeks of pregnancy, this was something unexpected. But, it happened. And boy...., I wouldn't want to experience this ever again.

1. Fever
It started with fever and headache. Which was temporarily relieved by acetaminophen. And I was wary of taking drugs during pregnancy even though acetaminophen is considered safe. But I had to take or else I could not function. And high fever is not good for the pregnancy even though the effects will be more detrimental during the early months. Anyhow, I experienced frequent uterine contractions during the feverish period and that was scary. In case I go into premature labour.

2. Lethargy
This was pretty bad. Towards the end of pregnancy, fatigue often overwhelmed me. And being down with fever, the fatigue came in double dose. Really drain the energy.

3. Muscle and joint pains
This was another intolerable symptom. My pregnancy is also associated with muscle pain and back pain. Thus, the fever-induced muscle and joint pains drove me crazy with pain and discomfort.

4. Loss of appetite
One express way to reduce weight. But with the baby inside, I sure don't want to jeopardize the baby's growth.

5. Low platelet count
The count declined from 227 to 224 to 108. Then thank God, it increased to 119, 141 and the last check was 260. Pheww.... Because of the multiple blood tests, my arm still bear the black and blue bruise due to phlebotomy. Friends gave lots of tips in order to increase the platelet count such as crab soup, guava juice and 100 plus. And of course, lots of plain water.

6. Dengue antibody
The low platelet count was suggestive of dengue. However, virological test further confirmed the diagnosis and I was found to be positive for dengue IgG and IgM. Nyamuk kat area Batu Caves/Gombak memang ganas...

7. Dehydration
I was thirsty, BIG TIME. Which was good, cause I need to fill myself up with lots of fluid. But the setback was, the frequent trips to the toilet. The trips are already annoyingly frequent during pregnancy but with the extra fluid filling the bladder, the trips were unbearable. With the muscle pain and lethargy, getting up to go to the loo was torturous.

Anyhow, thank God the dengue fever did not deteriorate into a haemorrhagic one. And I don't have any rashes nor do I experience nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Alhamdulillah, I am fully recovered and back to my normal self. Well... as normal as I can be as a pregnant woman :). May the remaining of my pregnancy weeks and the delivery itself go well and uneventful. Amiinn...
Historical Malacca
A few weeks ago, my family and I went to Malacca. My sister who resides there held an open house in conjunction with Eid celebration. It took us about 2 hour drive to get there. Less if we did not make a stop along the way.

My kids met their cousins and had fun playing together. However we could not stay for long. We still have few other places to visit. And I knew how badly my kids wanted to stay and continue playing.

Anyhow, every time I went to Malacca, memories of years ago came rushing back. Malacca was declared as Historical City on April 15th 1989. I made my own history in Malacca shortly after that happy.

After completing SPM in Form Five, I was offered to do matriculation/pre-U in one of the schools in Malacca, namely Sekolah Sains Muzaffar Syah, famously known as Mozac. And there, histories were made.

Pic from here.
  1. The school is located on a hill. Each time when we went out for the weekly outing, we had to wait for the public transport downhill. And to go down there, apart from the main road, there is a flight of steps, which kalau tinggi sikit lagi dah sama macam tangga Batu Caves. Going down was a piece of cake. But going up after an outing was a different story whew!.
  2. During severe water crisis in Malacca, we were badly affected. The only source of water was from a water pipe located downhill. Imagine having to carry a pail almost full of water up the steps only to find half of the water splashed out along the way at wits' end.
  3. Being the most senior students in the school, we were sort of the outlaws. Occasionally late for morning assembly and often violated the off-lights time. If I remember it correctly, the switch-off time was at 11pm. And the poor prefect in charge of that week had to yell again and again, 'Dorm E!! Off lights!!'.There were recreation or sports time every afternoon when we had to leave our dorm clad in sports attire and expected to do some sports activities but being the outlaw, we spent our time in the canteen instead, to study/do homework/gossip.
  4. Being the most senior students in the school, some of us were keen to 'angkat' some of the juniors as 'adik angkat'. Macam la tak cukup ada adik sendiri winking.
  5. Being the student in the school, we had to wear same school uniforms: white baju kurung with light blue kain. With one exception, instead of wearing white school shoes, we were required to wear black shoes. And there was a different uniform for outings tongue.
  6. My sister who lives nearby occasionally came to visit and usually not empty-handed. Usually, there will be nasi lemak, enough to feed the whole dorm. Oh yes, a dorm was assigned specifically for the Matric students. Takkan nak campur dengan budak bawah umur kan...hee hee
  7. I had a favourite spot/table in the study room in the hostel. Shared together with a couple of my friends and a couple of juniors. I guess the other junior students understood the 'invisible' booking system coz we never saw other students use that table. Matric girls lain tak study kat study room sebab diorang dah tere...nerd
  8. I had my nickname established there and it stuck until todayrock on!.
  9. I met some of my bestest friends there big hug.
  10. The best of all, I met my husband there love struck.
The Evolution of Kad Raya
During primary school, raya cards were sent by hand. And cartoon decorated cards were the favorite then. Each card tak sah kalau tak de ending macam ni:

Pecah kaca pecah gelas,
Sudah baca harap balas.

Well, sort of tak balik modal kalau orang tu tak balas balik kad raya yang kita beli and bagi.

And for the more keInggerisan style, the poem goes like this:

I have a pen,
My pen is blue,
I have a friend,
My friend is you.

Then as I grew up and entered secondary school, I started to have pen pals from other schools. Each day, waiting for the mails was the highlight of the day day dreaming. And the thrill of receiving mails and raya cards (by post) was beyond speech. But of course, raya cards were still exchanged by hand. Tapi apa la sangat thrillnya, exchanging cards between girls...hee hee

Upon entering pre-U and U era, I still kept in touch with some of the girls from school and occasionally did send cards to them. I used to make a list of the recipients' names and calculated on how many cards I have to buy. At that time, I preferred buying the 5 in 1 raya cards packet. Cost-effective. But the downside of buying these kind of cards was sometimes the cards were not appropriate for a friend and the words were a bit to the romantic side. Sangat tidak sesuai sigh. So sometimes I cheated and opened the package just to ensure the wordings were right. And yess... need to calculate the amount of stamps I need to buy too.

Going into the postgrad studies and he beginning of the working world, I started to have email account. And started to gain access to PCs with internet line. And with that, I was exposed to websites which offer e-cards and greeting cards with very simple instruction on how to send it virtually, as long as you know the recipient's email address. Besides the simplicity, the e-cards have pretty images, some with animation and with background song too. So, why buy? And my raya cards buying impulse dwindled ever since.

And sometimes I used the creative side of me (yang tak berapa kreatif) to create a personalized raya card using Power point with its animations features. But sometimes the laziness got over me and I resort to the existing e-cards again.
This year, the only raya card that I bought was this. And it's not even for me. It's for my kids, to be sent to their grandparents kat kampung.

And since it was ages ago that I sent any mail by post, I have no idea what stamp to buy and I had to ask the staff at the counter. She said, 50 cents stamp. Whoa!!surprise It used to be 15 cents I think. But yes, that was ages ago. And I remembered 20 cents was still enough to deliver your letter. And yes, I recalled when they increased it to 30 cents. Now it's 50 cents huh? Well, I don't blame them for increasing the price. I'm sure they have incurred a great loss in that area of service. No wonder Pos Malaysia did the TV advertisement below. Nice ad but once I have landed into the cozy, easy peasy comfort of IT and email and information at your fingertips, it's really hard to turn back peace sign.

Life on Loan
Life is pretty unexpected. One second, you're high up. The next second, you're way down. One day, you're happy. The next day, you're depressed. This month, you feel fit and healthy. The next month, you're not anymore.

That's what happened to me. I noticed a swelling on my left neck about 2-3 months ago. I delayed in consulting a doctor, hoping it was just my imagination. But it's not. It kept staring at me whenever I look in the mirror. And I also considered, what organ may be affected to cause the sweling. And I can only think of the thyroid gland. I reflected a bit: have I ever had any symptoms of hyperthyroidism? Uhh uhh...nope. Hypothyroidism? I don't think so.

The worry was building up so I got a referral to HUKM and went for check-up. Well, one thing led to another. I underwent an FNAC aka fine needle aspiration cytology, where a needle was inserted into the enlarged area and the cells from the area was aspirated out for further analysis. Well, the name FNAC is quite deceiving because the needle is not fine at all. And during my time, the pathologist had to do it twice. Once was painful enough, ni buat dua kali pulak... Pheww...whew!I also had an ultrasound and thyroid function test done.

Well, upon having the FNAC results and interpretations as well as the ultrasound findings (I won't bore you with the technical details), it was decided that I need to go for an operation. The left lobe of my thyroid gland need to be removed, something that is called hemi-thyroidectomy medically.

So, a date was set and I had to make some adjustments to my teaching commitments. A few days before the operation, a colleague asked 'Having palpitation yet?' Strange, but I was quite calm. Well, maybe because I busied myself with work and try not to think what lay ahead. Another colleague called and she commented, you sound cheerful je..' Hmm... Am I that strong? Well, what she didn't know was that beneath the so-called stoic, calm face and cheerful voice, I crumbled a few times crying and had to sought comfort from the Al-Mighty and of course dearest hubby. I'm so blessed to have a very supporting and understanding man as a husband love struck.

On the specified date, I was warded. I requested for Wad Warga of HUKM, a ward that is specially reserved for the staffs of UKM and their family members. Thank God there was a vacancy. Since there are limited rooms in the ward, it may be full house at times.  They put me in a 2-bedded room initially since no single room is available (well, fortunately I'm entitled to have the single room) and was then transferred to the single room few hours later. I was also informed that there are four-bedded rooms as well. But yeah, I really think that HUKM should open up another Wad Warga.

Having lunch in the hospital. Sometimes the food can lead to more depression winking.

The single room, thus more privacy.

And I was supplied with this. Cool...cool

To prepare for the op, I went for vocal cord assessment. Thyroidectomy may be very tricky because of the location of the gland and the nerves surrounding it, specifically the recurrent laryngeal nerve. The nerve that innervate the vocal cord and is responsible for voice. The operation can cause damage to the nerve and will lead to hoarseness of voice. And that is a no-no shame on you  in my line of work. So the vocal cord assessment was done to ensure that the vocal cord is actually functioning well before the operation. Then, if anything goes wrong after the op, boleh la nak saman ke apa ke...tongue

The assessment is something what a vocal teacher would do in Akademi Fantasia for instance. I need to say Aeeeeeee...... But with one exception, a scope is inserted down my throat and the image of the vocal cords can be seen on a monitor. Despite the local anesthetic spray, the procedure still cause some discomfort. Ughh... sick

I was also seen by an anesthesiologist who asked a lot of history. And he happened to be one of my students years ago. His face does look familiar. Having one of my ex-students as my anesthesiologist, shouldn't I feel safe? After all, my colleagues and I were the ones who taught them about drugs which include anesthetic agents.

My operation was scheduled the next day. The first case of the day. So I was given midazolam, a sedative, and donned the OT gown quite early in the morning. My husband managed to arrived before I was wheeled to the OR. He had to mind the kids, wake them up, make sure they are dressed for school and send them to school and then rushed to the hospital. I was quite calm during the journey 5 floors down to the OR. The midazolam's effects must have kicked in.

In the OR, eventually I was put on the gas mask and the scent reminded me of my car's air freshener. At the same time I was injected with another anesthetic agent via the branula on my left hand. And ouchh... That hurts. So, there I was, lying on the narrow OT table/bed, thinking of the pain on my left hand and wondering why the hell was I still conscious thinking. The next thing I know, I was trying to open my heavy eyes, and hey... the operation was over.

The surgeon who did the procedure is one of the deputy deans and a great specialist. So I was in good hands, Alhamdulillah. I was told later that he did a small incision on the neck to save me from a large scar. About 3 cm incision and he and his assistants had to put extra effort in removing the left lobe of the gland which measures about 5 cm. He faced some difficulties initially in finding my recurrent laryngeal nerve which became very naughty that day and placed itself so close to one of the large veins. But everything turned out well in the end, praise to Allah praying. But I was told to expect some bruises around the wound due to the retraction of the skin during the procedure.

This is the dissected tissue. Look pretty nasty, isn't it?

And I had to have this drain attached to my neck to drain the blood out. It was a bloody affair during the operation, I was told.

It was difficult and quite painful to swallow after the operation. So I had to eat this.

I was able to talk immediately after the operation even though I needed to clear my throat frequently. That was a relief.

Some colleagues came for a visit and brought this. (oh yess.... I was bored in the hospital, sampai benda ni pun nak ambik gambar sigh).

I was retained in the hospital for 3 days. And I thought I would rest my voice so that it is fully recovered. But no... not long after I got back home, I have started yelling at my kids... Sheesh.. Even though I think I have regained my original voice, I couldn't help but ask my hubby, 'Makin merdu tak suara ni?' He laughed and said, 'sama je la...' Cheh... I won't mind if he lied. laughing

Anyhow, I used to have a thyroid gland. But now, half of it is gone. It is one of the things that we claimed as ours but actually it is only loaned to us. For how long? Not for us to know. Today, it's the thyroid gland. Next? Who knows? Maybe the liver, the kidneys, the limbs or maybe even the ability to breathe. Like all other loans, the things that Allah loaned to us are not without terms and conditions. The question is: have I abide by the T and C? Err.... that's a very difficult question worried.
